The dragon sits at the head of the four guardians. In East Asian myth the dragon is not a monster to be slain but a sovereign to be respected — it commands the rain, it governs the rivers, and where it passes, things grow. It is authority itself, the creature thrones borrowed their imagery from.
The medal gives you both halves of that idea: on the front the dragon is alive, red and gold, coiling up through cloud in high enamel relief; turn it over and the same creature has become jade — still, carved, permanent. One hundred and seventy-nine kilometres across eighty-eight days is the longest road in this virtual running challenge collection, and the eighty-eight is not an accident: in East Asian tradition it is the luckiest number there is, a doubled wish for prosperity.
Two faces
Finished on both sides. Neither face is a stamp of the other.
Its own ribbon
Every guardian is given a ribbon dyed to the enamel it carries — oxblood red for the dragon. This is the exact weave, at full width.

A gold key-fret runs the full length of both edges. The same border is on all four ribbons; only the ground changes.
A tone-on-tone weave, visible when the light catches it and quiet when it does not.
