The kylin has the head of a dragon, the body of a deer and the hooves of a horse, and for all that fierceness it is the gentlest of the four. The old texts say it treads without bending a blade of grass and shows itself only where there is virtue: at the birth of a sage, at the arrival of a just ruler. It is not a warning. It is the sign that things are going right.
Its blessings sit on the reverse — the gourd that carries medicine and good fortune, and the blossom coin that stands for prosperity arriving in its own season. Eighty-eight kilometres across seventy-nine days is the most even pace in the collection, a little over a kilometre a day. Seventy-nine is the greater of the two lucky numbers for wealth — and the kylin is the creature that never once chased it. That is the whole argument of this virtual running challenge: you do not have to force it.
Two faces
Finished on both sides. Neither face is a stamp of the other.
Its own ribbon
Every guardian is given a ribbon dyed to the enamel it carries — midnight blue for the kylin. This is the exact weave, at full width.
