In short: Under $250 buys a complete starter kit: shoes, socks, shirt, shorts and a way to carry water. From $250 to $500, the shoes and clothes step up noticeably. Over $500, most of the extra goes on a GPS watch. If money is tight, spend in this order: shoes that fit, then running socks, then everything else. Each kit below is from one store where possible, so it is easy to order, and shows the total at list price.

Where the money goes

What to buy first on a running budget
PriorityItemWhy
1Shoes that fitComfort and fewer aches; nothing else matters as much
2Running socksThe cheapest way to prevent blisters
3Shorts and a shirt that wickComfort on hot or long days
4A way to carry a phone or waterHands free on longer runs
5A GPS watchNice to have; your phone already tracks distance

The first two rows matter most. A good fit and good socks prevent the sore feet and blisters that make new runners quit. Everything after that is comfort and convenience, which you can add as runs get longer and you learn what bothers you.

The Winflo 12 is a cushioned daily trainer that handles easy miles, and the Challenger shorts have three pockets for keys and gels. The 12 oz handheld is enough for a run of an hour or so in warm weather. Buy two or three pairs of socks if you run often.

This kit suits someone starting with walk-run intervals or aiming at a first 5K. It is also plenty for a walking challenge, where the shoes and socks do almost all the work. If you need to trim it further, swap the Miler top for a polyester T-shirt you already own and skip the handheld until runs pass an hour.

The GEL-CUMULUS 28 is lighter and more cushioned than the entry shoes, which you notice on runs past an hour. A waist pack with a flask keeps your hands free. This is the kit we would suggest to most people starting a 10K or half-marathon plan.

The ASICS clothes cost a little more than the Nike and adidas basics, and the ASICS Road shorts are one of the pricier pairs here. If you want to keep the shoe and cut the total, the Own the Run shorts and tee do the same job for less.

    List price at coros.com, checked Nov 6, 2026 · Photo: coros.com

Total at list price$519

The extra money mostly buys the COROS PACE 4: GPS pace and heart rate on the wrist and a long battery, so you can leave the phone at home. Without the watch, this kit lands in the middle band.

If a watch is not a priority, put the difference toward a second pair of shoes instead. Two pairs in rotation last longer than one pair run every day, and it costs less than the watch.

Ways to spend less

  • Buy last season’s version of a shoe. It is often discounted and close to identical.
  • Wait for sales on clothes; running shirts and shorts are discounted often.
  • Use what you have: any light, non-cotton shirt works.
  • Skip the water carrier for short runs in mild weather; drink before and after instead.
  • Skip the watch until you know you will keep running. Your phone and the X Challenge app record the distance.
  • Buy socks in multipacks.
  • Check the brand’s outlet section; many have one for older colors.
  • Ask about running-club discounts at local stores; many offer them.
  • Join a local running club or parkrun-style group; members often swap tips on where the sales are.

Making a kit last

Shoes wear fastest. At three runs a week of 3 miles, a 400-mile pair lasts about eight months. Rotate two pairs if you run most days, wash clothes cold and air-dry them. Running clothes last years if you keep them out of a hot dryer; shoes are the only real running cost. A budget kit is enough for any challenge here, from LOKI to DRAGON, which gives you 88 days to cover about 111.2 miles.

Track the miles on each pair. A note in your phone with the start date is enough; the weekly totals in the X Challenge app tell you roughly how far the shoes have gone.

Common questions

  • Is cheap gear a false economy? Not for clothes. For shoes, fit matters more than price, but very cheap non-running shoes wear out fast.
  • Can I mix brands? Yes. The single-brand kits here just make ordering simple.
  • Should I buy used shoes? Not usually. Worn foam has already shaped to someone else’s stride, and you cannot tell how many miles it has.
  • Is it worth paying for gait analysis? Many running stores do a quick one for free. It can help narrow the choice, but comfort still decides.
  • What about women’s sizes? Each brand sells women’s versions of these items at about the same price.
  • What is the cheapest way to start? Shoes that fit and two pairs of running socks. Everything else can wait.
  • Do I need a watch to train? No. The phone in your belt records the run.
  • Is it worth buying a kit for a single challenge? Yes, if it gets you moving. The same kit lasts for many more.

Prices

Prices are list prices at the brand’s own store on the day checked. They change, and sales are common, so check the live page before you buy. We picked by specs, fit notes and price; we have not run in every item. Where a product is men’s, the brand sells a women’s version at about the same list price. Shopping by training level instead?
